Volunteer To Help Eliminate Domestic Violence

​

People who are willing and able to freely give their precious time are so invaluable to our mission. We so appreciate and honor the dedication and compassion of volunteers! With your help, we are able to better serve victims who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault.

How do I become a volunteer?

​

  • Complete Volunteer Application Online here

  • Undergo a background and reference check

  • Attend an Orientation Session at our office

  • Based on your areas of interest and volunteer service, complete the required training 

    • Service/Community Volunteers: Orientation -  This will include information about the facility, disaster plans, first aid, universal precautions and safety. A facility tour and training specific to their assigned volunteer duties will be included. This training must be completed prior to engaging in volunteer activities.

    • Direct Client Service Volunteers: 8 hours of in-person and 22 hours of online mandatory training addressing domestic and sexual violence, community resources, confidentiality and more.

What are the areas of service available?

  • Service/Community Volunteers​​

    • Fundraising Activities - ICAN! is a non-profit organization and volunteers are needed to assist in fundraising opportunities and events throughout the year.

    • ​Administrative Support - answering phones and directing calls and visitors to the proper staff, sorting and organizing donations, organizing clothing closet and transitional housing storage areas. copying, filing, general cleaning of the facilities.

    • Community Education/Outreach - represent ICAN! at community and corporate events. Provide information, fliers, and collect information from potential volunteers. Set up table with materials and take down table, returning materials to ICAN! office.

  • Direct Client Service Volunteers
    • Crisis Line Advocacy - ​crisis line advocates are the first responders in supporting domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and human trafficking victims. Our 24-hour crisis line can be answered in the office or at your home; resource materials are provided. Crisis line advocates offer: support through active listening, information and referrals to helpful community resources, safe alternatives to abusive situations and environments.
    • Client Transportation - many domestic violence and sexual assault victims are left without transportation and simply need assistance getting from point A to point B.  Client transportation could include:
      • transportation to emergency shelter -- picking the client up in a safe place and transporting to emergency shelter location

      • transportation to long-term shelter -- transporting clients to one of the various shelters throughout the state

      • transportation to another designated safe location -- transporting client to a safe location -- such as a relative’s home.

    • VPO/Court Advocacy - assist victims in completing protective order petitions and related paperwork. Act as a support person for clients during their hearings at VPO court. Provide information on ICAN! programs and services. 

    • Hospital Advocacy - assist victims and nurses during a sexual assault exam. Provide information and referrals on ICAN! programs and services. This position requires additional mentoring on at least three calls with a staff member or trained volunteer. This is an on-call position and advocate must be within 30 minutes of exam location.

    • Childcare Services - supervise children at the ICAN! office while parents attend support group sessions or fill out protective orders. Volunteers are preferably trained in basic first-aid and CPR.
